ADAM VICKS – MY MENTOR FOR SELF-CONTROL
If I had to choose one characteristic I admire most about Jesus Christ it would be self-control. Growing up, I was always one of the shortest guys among my peers, but I was tough. I felt that I had to flex my bravado to overcompensate for my shortcomings. But as I studied the Gospels and learned how Jesus responded to his detractors, I began to think differently. I realized that self-control requires way more strength than going off the rails. I reflect on this daily to bring my flesh under subjection.
– Adam Vicks, Washington, D.C.
My favorite passage from James Allen’s The Might Of Meekness: There is a poignant passage in The Might of Meekness, in which James Allen writes: “There shall be no end to strife until men cease to justify themselves. He who would have wars cease let him cease to defend any party—let him cease to defend himself.”
My favorite BIBLE passage related to this: 1 Cor. 9:24-27: Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.
