PRAYING
A client’s spouse calls last minute to share that her husband will be missing his workout due to a close family member’s funeral. You care deeply for the client and want to reach out. What would be most helpful?
Fitness professionals measure success on tangible results. But in God’s economy it’s impossible to predict what’s next or can’t measure the impact our prayers have. However, if God has put people in in a trainer or coach’s care, it is imperative to partner with Him in facilitating what He is doing their life. Without the power of God in their lives, all the physical training in the world is useless. In some cases, it’s appropriate to share that you are praying for others. Be attentive to any nudges to pray with individuals as well. Some tips for praying for clients, members, staff or others include:
- It’s easy to over-commit to praying for others. If you feel led to pray for someone, do it right then and there.
- Have a box of cards in your office and write a short, simple note that says you care and will be praying.
- Ask the Holy Spirit to put people on your heart during the day who need prayer. Whatever you are doing you can simply respond in your spirit with, “Yes, Lord”, agreeing to whatever the Holy Spirit is doing in their life.

How can fitness professionals truly be the effective leaders their clients need? Those trainers and owners who do it best realize that it is less about their credentials and more about their heart space—leading with love and modeling Jesus in actions, words and intentions.
Many people who enroll in a fitness program need and want a pastor — a shepherd who leads, guides and walks alongside. Although life-long Bible learning and ministry training can be key to doing ministry well, you don’t have to be an ordained pastor or have a divinity or theology degree to be a minister of the gospel through fitness ministry. You just have to relinquish control and let the Spirit lead you as you guide others.
