True transformation isn’t just physical; it’s spiritual. The strength, discipline, and hope you need to keep moving forward are found in God’s Word. And the way to bring His Word into your daily battles and victories is simple yet powerful – pray the Scriptures.
Job 23:12 states, “I have esteemed the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.” If you don’t eat physically, you will become unhealthy and eventually die. If you don’t eat spiritually, your fate will be the same. Job’s testimony reminds you of the importance of having spiritual food to build your spiritual body.
Cleansing the Mind
When your desire is to grow—whether in health and fitness or in your walk with God—you will come to a place where you need to be changed and cleansed from old ways. God designated His Word to cleanse you spiritually. As you prayerfully read and study the Word, God causes a cleansing to take place in your heart.
Changing an old thought requires a new thought. Old negative thought processes are counter-productive to transformation. Some of them are actually toxic; for example, thinking you are destined to be overweight, that you are unworthy of success, or that you lack the willpower and discipline to live a healthy life. These negative thoughts are developed out of insecurities and soul wounds.
Spiritual Detoxification
To change your old, toxic thoughts, you need to go through a “spiritual detox.” This consists of studying Scripture, memorizing it, and praying it. Spiritual detoxification is similar to physical detoxification; both cleanse the system of impurities and toxins with the purpose of developing a healthy lifestyle.
As adverse situations arise, your responsibility is to use the Scriptures and trust God. The core of your success is His Word. For example: if you wake up and feel depressed, spiritually weak, and are tempted to seek comfort in unhealthy ways—you can no longer respond the way you once did. Remember, your old thought process is toxic. Your new thought process must be the Word of God.
This is where praying the Word comes in. When you take Scripture and pray it, you are not just speaking words—you are aligning your life with His truth.
Scriptures to Pray
Here are examples of scriptures you can pray, based on the struggles you may be facing:
- Comfort → “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever.” — John 14:16
- Encouragement → “For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.” — Isaiah 41:13
- Strength → “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.” — Ephesians 6:10
- Faith → “If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.” — Matthew 17:20
- Healing → “I said, Lord, be merciful unto me: heal my soul; for I have sinned against thee.” — Psalm 41:4
Jesus, Our Perfect Example
In Luke 4, we read about Jesus responding to a time of testing. He was extremely hungry after fasting for forty days, and the adversary suggested He turn the stones into bread. Jesus quoted Deuteronomy 8:3, saying, “That man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord.” God’s Word was our Savior’s foundation and quoting it from memory is how He achieved victory.
When you are tempted, weary, or discouraged, your answer should always begin with the same three words: It is written.
