When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” John 11:43 (NIV)
Do you think Lazarus hesitated when He heard Jesus call to him? I can’t imagine any scenario that he’d not come running out. If I were wrapped up in a dark cave, and Jesus called me out, I’d go running. And yet, He did call to me, and I didn’t come out.
I was trapped in a cave of my own making for years. I was wrapped up in my insecurities. I was wrapped up in worries about my weight. I made it my life’s purpose to lose a few pounds. Jesus was calling to me to come out of this cave of my own making, but I didn’t. I stayed wrapped up in my insecurities. I listened to words written in magazines and voices on the internet. I let that noise drown out the voice of God calling to me. I wasn’t living the full life God had designed for me to live. Instead of coming out of that darkness, I chose to stay in my cave.
What has you wrapped up? Is there an area of your life that feels lifeless? Jesus is calling you out of your darkness. He can set you free. He did it for me, and He can do it for you, too!
Eventually, I realized that Jesus was calling to me through the words of the Bible. I started hearing His voice in those scriptures. His voice became louder than the noise around me. He wanted to unravel the hold that insecurity and obsession over my weight had on me. When I responded, He was faithful to meet me where I was and set me free. His Word, His Spirit in us, is how we can become sensitive to His voice and respond to His call.
