Top 5 Brain Superfoods

By Michelle Spadafora, Founder Faithful Workouts

We all want our brains to be healthy as we age, but when it comes to fueling both our brain and body, what are the best foods to eat? In this post, we’ll take a look at the top 5 brain super foods that will help power your brain for years to come!

1. Pomegranates (and pomegranate juice)

Pomegranates are filled to the brim with important antioxidants, which are great for a healthy brain. But why are antioxidants so important for our brains? Think about it this way – all the cells in our body are subject to wear and tear as we age, but brain cells are especially susceptible to this. Antioxidants can help to support the brain and reverse some of the oxidation damage our brains sustain over time. Plus, pomegranates are delicious! If you buy pomegranate juice, know that you don’t need to drink much at one time to get the brain benefits. Also, be sure your juice doesn’t have any added sugar.

2. Blueberries

Similarly, blueberries are another great source of antioxidants. They’re great for fueling our brains as well as helping our brain heal from damage. They’ve also been shown to help reduce widespread inflammation in our bodies. Blueberries are also a great source of Vitamin C and fiber, which will help keep you full for longer. With all these benefits, be sure to grab a handful of blueberries to snack on today!

3. Walnuts

You’ve likely heard that walnuts are one of the best brain foods out there (they even look like mini brains!) but you might not know why. Walnuts are a great natural source of DHA, an Omega-3 fatty acid. Eating walnuts has not only been associated with an increase in the brain’s ability to learn and remember, but they’re also a great protector against heart disease. Who knew these little nuts packed such a powerful health punch?

4. Salmon

Who doesn’t love some salmon? It’s a great source of protein and healthy fats. Like walnuts, salmon is filled with Omega-3’s which not only help with memory, they also have an anti-aging effect on the brain! Studies have shown that many American’s are deficient in Omega-3’s, so be sure you’re incorporating foods like walnuts, salmon, chia seeds and spinach into your diet.

5. Beets

Now this is one brain super food I bet you don’t hear talked about much! A lot of the research on beets and the brain is relatively new, but that doesn’t make it any less important. Recent studies have suggested that one of the compounds in beets can actually help to slow and even reverse the brain plaques and tangles that cause Alzheimer’s Disease. Beets sometimes get a bad rap, but prepared correctly they really are so delicious! You can bake your beets and serve them with a bit of goat cheese or chop them up into an arugula salad, but regardless of how you cook them, just make sure to get your beets in this week.
