Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.
Psalm 91:1-2 (NIV)
When you consider what it means to be in someone’s shadow, it’s usually negative. Less important. Going unnoticed. It usually involves comparison. We women certainly don’t need any of that in our lives! But that’s not what Psalm 91 is about. In fact, it’s anything but negative. This entire chapter is about the safety we find in the presence of God. He is our refuge, our shelter, a fortress. He saves. He guards. He lifts us up. Being in His shadow is about being in His presence. And by remaining in His shadow, we can remain in His presence.
Another picture that comes to mind when I think of shadow is one where I’m outside. You need the sun to see a shadow.
Although daily quiet time is important, we can experience His presence throughout our day. God’s Holy Spirit lives within us. He is always with us. We can step outside and feel the sun shining down on us and see it casting a shadow around us. Allow that to remind you that you are safe in His care. You can take your worries to Him and trust that He is good and that He will work all things for good for you.
Take a look at the final verses of this chapter: “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”
In place of “he,” put your name: “Because [Marsha] loves me…I will rescue her. I will protect [Marsha]…I will answer [Marsha]…
You get the idea. Make this personal. God’s Word is personal. It is meant for you. He is speaking to and about you.
