Part 3 – Kettlebell Swings and Youth Leadership Team Prayers
I drove to the local soccer fields with no real fitness plan. I know this can be shocking for some, since I have written and led thousands of workout sessions over almost 20 years. How could I go workout without an actual plan? I don’t have a great answer, but I think sometimes we get too focused on the plan. Sometimes the “plan” (or lack thereof) can become the excuse to not do anything…”I would workout, but I haven’t really found the plan that is right for me.” Ever heard this or better yet, ever said it to yourself to get out of training?
This was a day when if I over-focused on the plan and put together a killer routine, it would have zapped the life out of me. So, I just got in my car and started driving. The internal battle (Do I go or do I just stay home and chill?) was way more important than what I was actually going to do, so I just started driving and trusted myself to figure it out when I got to the field.
And boy, did I ever figure it out. My first idea was to just hit 100 kettlebell swings, run around a little bit, hit some pull-ups, and call it a day.
Then this thought hit me…what if I combined some prayer time for our youth leadership team with kettlebell swings? On my phone is a GroupMe texting group with 32 names – 29 high schoolers and 3 adults. What if I took each person and dedicated 10 swings to them, praying during the reps? Suddenly, a workout that I was just surviving and making up as I go, had a new energy and purpose. Could I triple the output I had originally planned? Here’s how it turned out and the video that I sent our team:
Let me know your thoughts and creative ways that you have combined prayer with training!
I have another kettlebell prayer workout coming next week!
