Hunt, Fish and Sustain
Fitness Adventure: Hiking, biking and fishing
Where: Cooper Landing, Alaska
When: September
The Low-Down
The Russian River, just 2 hours south of Anchorage, offers some of the most spectacular trout fishing, views, and wilderness experiences that you will find anywhere in the world. It’s not the sit-in-your-boat-and-eat-sandwiches kind of fishing though. This is the kind of fishing you have to work for: hike or mountain bike 2.5 miles to a waterfall that should have hundreds of salmon still trying to jump the falls and get to Upper or Lower Russian Lake. Walk the river back down for some trophy-size trout or for a robust workout, keep hiking and fish the flat water of the lakes above. The entire trail is 21 miles long, so getting your daily workout shouldn’t be a problem. There are several other hike-to-fish trails in the area, check out the Alaska Outdoor Journal to find out exactly where to go. Remember your bear protection and read the Alaska fishing regulations, which can be complex.
For a guided experience in the same area, check out the Christian Sportsmen Fellowship website. They’re planning a week-long wilderness experience that can include any number of amazing adventures that include hiking, biking, paddling, fishing or hunting.
Other Stuff to Do
Book a raft trip down the world-famous Kenai River for more fishing or just a wildlife float. For the more adventurous, go whitewater rafting on Six Mile Creek or rent your own sea kayaks in the coastal town of Seward. Fly-out trips are a little more spendy, but they will get you out into some of the most amazing scenery you’ve ever seen.
